The Canadian Securities Course (CSIC,) is an entry-level continuing education program offered by the Canadian Securities Institute. Successful completion of this program and examination allow an individual to work as a full-time or part-time securities broker in the Canadian securities course. Those wishing to start their careers as brokers in the Canadian market can study online at the CSC’s website.
The primary goal of the Canadian Securities Course is to prepare students to pass the exams required to become certified as financial services brokers in Canada. These exams are based on the same tests that American brokers must take. However, they have slightly different entrance requirements because of the different market structures in Canada. The exams focus on the knowledge and skills required to analyze and evaluate the buying and selling activities of Canadian securities. They also cover investment objectives, risk management, and investment principles. There is also a requirement for students to demonstrate proficiency in English and have completed a high school diploma.
Candidates taking the Canadian Securities Course need not be certified in order to become a broker in the Canadian market. In fact, there are actually no national exams required to get a brokerage license in Canada. Once the candidates successfully complete the Canadian Securities Course and pass the exit exam then they will be eligible to sit for the exam for the Canadian Securities Broker designation. Brokerage firms are responsible for evaluating applicants to determine if they are eligible for the Broker Brokerage Brokering designation.
Brokers can obtain a Brokerage Brokering designation from two levels: the Associate Broker ( AB) and the Senior Broker ( BS). The AB designation is granted by a Canadian securities regulatory body and requires completion of the Canadian Securities Examination. The BS designation requires completion of an Australian domestic securities examination and the International Securities Brokerage Examination. Candidates with international experts who have passed these examinations may be considered for the senior Broker designation.
Candidates taking the Canadian Securities Course need to register with the securities regulator in their respective province or territory. The examinations and assessments include both written and practical examinations. The examinations cover both the Canadian Market and the U.S. Market and are administered in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. In addition to the written exams, a candidate needs to pass an oral examination and a corporate finance exam. A candidate’s knowledge and experience in accounting matters as well as an understanding of investing techniques are not taken into account when the licensing exams are being taken.
Candidates who successfully complete the Canadian Securities Course will receive a certificate. This certificate will allow them to open a Canadian mutual fund account. At the same time, investors will be given a list of investment companies that they can choose from if they want to become members of these investment funds. These mutual fund companies will handle all the brokerage of their members’ investments. As soon as an investor graduates from the course, they will get a license to invest and begin trading.
