Before we go into how to use a fire hose reel, it’s important to understand how the two types of reels differ and what kinds of flames a fire hose can put out. Fire hose reels are used to give a constant and manageable supply of water to a fire in order to put out type A fires (wood, paper, cloth, etc.). You should never use a fire hose near fuel, electricity, or other flammable materials because you run the risk of sparking a fire or receiving a shock.
Fixed Wall Mounted Fire Hose Reel
In New Zealand, fixed hose reels are the most typical kind. It is hooked into the current mains water supply and is permanently fixed in a designated position. So that the hose reel can move easily in an emergency, it’s crucial to maintain the wall space on either side clear of clutter.
Fire Hose Swing Arm Reel
Similar to the fixed kind, but with a huge hinge mounting the hose reel assembly, which is typically put in a hose reel cabinet. The advantage of this hose reel is that it may be quickly swung out in an emergency and quickly withdrawn to follow the operator thanks to the hinge.
Fire Hose Reel System
- If an anti-tamper seal is installed, remove it.
- Open the stop valve to turn on the water supply.
- Stretch the hose as far as it needs to go to reach the fire. In contrast to lay-flat hoses, it is not necessary to run the entire hose.
- At the nozzle, start the water.
- Aim the stream at the fire’s base. Use just enough water to put out the fire; using too much water risks causing additional harm.
After The Fire Is Extinguished
- Shut off the water at the nozzle once the fire has been put out.
- Roll the hose up in uniform layers. When the hose is still filled with water, this is simpler to accomplish.
- Close the stop valve to turn off the water.
- To let the pressure out into a bucket, open the nozzle.
- Close the nozzle and place it in the holder once more.
