Impact Of Technology On Education

“I have never let my schooling get in the way of my education” – Mark Twain.

There are a few things they don’t teach you in school;

  • Pythagoras Theorem
  • Statistics and Data Analysis
  • Probability

You know, just all the practical applications you actually need in life, but hey, I’m so glad I learned the Probability and Stats. Where would I be today if I didn’t know how to analyze the data based on the particular measurements? Thank you, school.

This post is for all the students out there that I know are struggling and stressing about their exams. Don’t fret, it’s only a moment in time. We all have our weaknesses and in school, we’re forced to learn some of them. Regardless if we like the subjects or not. We’re brought up to believe there is only a right or a wrong answer. As highlighted in the speech above by Neil deGrasse Tyson.

In school, we’re forced to triple down on our weaknesses as opposed to our strengths, which doesn’t make any sense what so ever. Fortunately, this generation has it much better than we ever did. Technology has paved the way to turn your passions into jobs much easier than before. Imagine trying to become an actor back in the 80s. Now all you need is a good phone, and decent internet connection and you’re a star showing off your talent on the social media.

In addition, the access to the internet has provided kids like my own with a smart move to success in education. It’s trimmed down the fat and waffle and given them access to exactly what they need to know. Back in the day, we’d have to learn everything from the ground up. Now kids just need to be taught the methodology to particular concepts to do the problems by themselves.

For instance, ever since I started school I always struggled with Math so you’re not alone. In all honesty, I believe you’re either good at it or not. Simple as that. Unfortunately, it’s forced upon us throughout our whole lives.

Recently, I decided to get my son an online math tutor because he’s going through the same struggles as I did. Guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, am I right? Our family must be cursed to be bad at math. Anyway, ever since I got him this extra guidance his grades have been excelling. Every day my son walks into the house like he owns the place with this smug look on his face thinking he’s better than me. I know he’s only 9 but I’m seriously thinking of kicking him out if he gets any better.

All joking aside, as you can see these online resources teach our kids exactly what they need to know. However, in school, they want you to understand everything from the fundamentals and up. As a result, this can lead to a lot of waffle and unnecessary information. Whereas using outside professional guidance will get straight to the point and explain to them what they need to know.

Oh, how the times have changed.

I wish I had this technology back in my day. Maybe then I could have shown my dad who’s boss.
