Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination every year for recruiting candidates into the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and Officers Training Academy. All the candidates need to go through a tough selection process only after which they can be admitted to the respective academy of their choice. Here are the eligibility details for applying for this exam.
- Nationality:
A candidate must belong to any one of the following categories when it comes to nationality
(a) A citizen of India
(b) A citizen of Nepal
(c) A citizen of Bhutan
(d) A Tibetan refugee who migrated to India before 1st January 1962 for settling permanently.
(e) An Indian who has relocated from countries like Pakistan, Burma, or Srilanka or East African countries such as Zambia, Uganda, Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zaire and Malawi, Ethiopia or Vietnam for settling permanently in India.
If a person belongs to the last four categories, then they need an eligibility certificate signed by the Government of India.
- Age Limit:
(i) For IMA, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and OTA (SSC for men): Unmarried male born between the date issued by the USPC.
(ii) For Officers Training Academy (SSC Women Non-Technical Course): Unmarried women or issueless widows who have not remarried and issueless divorcees (who possess the divorce documents) and have not remarried are eligible. They must belong to the birth date issued by the UPSC.
- Educational Qualification:
(i) For I.M.A. and OTA: The candidate must hold a degree of a recognized University or equivalent.
(ii) For Indian Naval Academy: The candidate must hold an Engineering degree from a recognized university or institution.
(iii) For Air Force Academy: The candidate must hold Degree of a recognized University and must have studied Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level or has completed his Bachelor of Engineering.
Candidates who are appearing for the final year degree course and are yet to pass examination can also appear for this CDS examination.
- Physical Standards: The candidates need to meet the physical standards as specified by the UPSC to become eligible for the examination and emerge as a successful candidate even when they have passed all the tests. A fail in meeting the physical standard might result in a rejection.
